 Short and simple, I have been making to-do lists (TDL) for as long as I can remember.  I had always thought that the list was there to keep me focused, on track, and getting my life done.  (Exactly, what does “getting life done” mean anyway?

 But, I had to face the fact that my list was not working.  But why?  I was being so diligent.  ARGGGG!

 I discovered that it wasn’t working for one primary reason. (Are you sitting down?)

 I wasn’t actually DOING what my TO DO LIST told me to do.  OHHHHH.  Doing things. Oh, I get it!

 There were a lot of reasons I wasn’t ‘obeying’ my list, but the most important thing I discovered was:

Life wasn’t much fun, because worrying about what I wasn’t getting done was draining all my energy!

 So, what’s the secret to getting things done and finding peace as you eliminate things from your list and plug your energy drains? 

 

This is a huge question that people have been asking for eons.  There are thousands of books and articles on behavior change and motivation.  There are as many organization techniques and systems and time management strategies.  All of them are great in their own way.

But what takes us from merely reading a book about getting things done to taking real, concrete action?  What makes us stop waiting to act?

For me, I’ve found that there are 4 crucial things that I often need to get things done.

  1.  Timing:  Now has to be the right time.  But what does that mean, the right time?  First, do you feel the task has merit or value?  Do you have juice for it RIGHT NOW?  If it is not there, then no amount of flogging, berating or rewarding yourself is going to get you to act.  So, the timing has got to be right. 
  2. Support:  There are massive amounts of evidence that most of us do better with support.  Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs prove that.  Weight Watcher, Exercise Clubs, etc all are built on the premise that we tackle the hard stuff better when we have support and do not feel alone.  This support can come in a variety of ways but it’s my belief and experience that when we feel supported (and shall I say accountable) we do far better than when we feel isolated and can slip under the public radar. 
  3. Planning:  We really stink at estimating how long things take, how much things cost and how easy or difficult tasks are.  Client after client has come to me with a mile-long TDL and a belief that they should be able to check things off in no time.  Yeah, tell that to a seed in your garden “Just grow already!”    No, some things take time, certain conditions, and often a quasi-logical sequence.  Without a realistic vision of what is possible and some logical planning things simply will not get done.
  4. A monetary investment:  Yes, that often means writing a check.  This is not always true but often times we feel that if we pay money, we’ll actually DO something.  I don’t really know the science behind this (if there is any),but I do know from my personal experience and the experience of my clients that “paying” literally and/or metaphorically can be the difference between getting some things done or having them hang over your head.  So yes, writing a check and making an investment that pinches just a bit is necessary.

 

What kinds of things are you talking about?” 

There are all sorts of things that are on our TDLs that are keeping us stuck.  There are as many items that may never make our actual list but are reserved for our mental “some day” list.   Do any of these examples sound familiar?

if only you’d find the time.

Clutter:  in your home, your office, your garage, your purse, your attic, your basement, your MIND!

Is there a book in you that is dying to get out?  Do you have empty journals that keep calling you to them but you aren’t finding the time?  Do you have paints, or watercolors or art supplies that are gathering dust? 

Finances:  Reconciliation of accounts, Taxes, Bill payment, creating a functional system

Have you been putting off going for that “BIG” client?  Is now the time to buck up and get your act together and land that big deal?

Hiring Help:  Do you need some assistance and/or support? Do you need to find the time to figure out what kind of help you need? 

You love nature but the only time you seem to get outside is walking to your car.  Do you crave time under the trees, taking a walk and looking at the stars?

Business Development:  Do you have a website?  A GOOD website?  What about a marketing plan, a good logo, a blog.  Where do you want to be in 1, 3 or 5 years?  Is it time to expand or downsize?

When was the last time you REALLY spent time with your family?  Are the kids growing before your eyes?  Are you parents getting older and you crave to connect with them more often.

Health:  Do you exercise?  When was the last time you had a physical?  How is your eating?  Do you need a plan for taking care of yourself better? 

When was the last time you had a massage, a play date, a nap in the hammock?  What about a manicure or pedicure, a trip to the spa or a few hours in a book store.  Seen any good movies lately?

Follow-Up:  OMG, there are so many people that you need to connect with...clients, potential clients, friends, family, etc.

Have you had an idea about a new product you want to develop or a way to expand your business?  Are you itching to sit down and map out a plan to grow or alter your business in a new an exciting way?

Social Networking:  Are you plugged into Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, etc.  It’s on your list but do you find time to do it?

  • I help you determine your timing.  What is your energy level around your TDL?   I  know there are things we have to do even if we don’t want to, but I help you find energy even for the crappy things you hate.  It’s all in the timing and how you frame it…and I teach you how to see your TDL as doable.  By the way, I will also help you cut the fat and get rid of things that you don’t need to do.  Whew, what a relief when you can simply take them off.
  • My program provides support in a variety of ways; from me as your coach, champion, and TDL cropper, to your colleagues and, since this is a class, fellow participants.  We will engage in lively classes, support open-telephone calls and one on one coaching.  You will be supported in making the changes you need to make to lose the WAIT.
